A draw back to digital photography

April 24th, 2007

I’ve been using digital camera for a number of years now, ever since my first one (a Fuji Finepix 2400). However, after purchasing my Canon 400D, I‚Äôve become aware of a small draw back to digital photograph. The issue I have is simply dealing with the number of pictures you end up at the end of a shoot, and thus the number of images you have to go through afterwards. Maybe this problem did exist for professional photographers when they used film, but for an amateur like me I was very careful thinking about when to press the shutter button. I had to remember that I only have 36 shots per roll and usually only a couple of rolls with me. However, now with 2GB or large memory cards the amount I can take is much greater. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that I just mindlessly point the camera in a direction and hold down the button, but I’m just taking more photographs of the same subject. The plus side of this is that it increases your chances of getting “that one shot” or a number of shots which you are hoping for. So taking more pictures increases the chances of getting that special shot. But it also increases the number of images you have to consider and decide whether to keep it or ditch it.

Oh well onto the next 110 images to sort through.

Photography Exhibition: Best Picture

March 27th, 2007

Last night was the opening of the photographic exhibition. I went along with a few friends to see how well my picture had come out. I must admit I was worried that at the size they were printing (10″ x 15″) it would become grainy. However, it looked as my old friend Ed would say “awesome”. In fact many of the other entries which I had seen in a smaller format also became something quite special at this size. Anyway, whilst walking around a number of people commented on how they liked my picture, and one even said that she wanted it in her bathroom. Along with the wine, crisps and live music, everyone was invited to vote on which picture they thought was the best one. To my absolute surprise, I won the best picture. Personally I thought Tom’s entry was better than mine, but according to the vote mine was the winner.

So first of all I need to say thank you to the University of Kent’s Photographic Society for arranging the exhibition, and a thank you to Olga for convincing me to actually submit something rather than just think about it.

For those of you that are around campus, the pictures are going to be moved down into the outside courtyard area of Rutherford soon.

Photography Exhibition

March 16th, 2007

Today I received some amazing news about a photographic exhibition. Earlier this week I submitted a couple of pictures to an exhibition that is to be held on campus. I wasn’t expecting much since this was the first time that I have submitted any pictures, and I guess a thank you to Olga who convinced me to do so. Anyway, one of the pictures I sent in has been selected for the small exhibition on campus, which will be in Rutherford College. Am so excited now to see what one of my pictures will look like on display.

Yesterday I attended the Art of Movement an open kata competition. Since I only join the local Goju Karate club this year, I wasn’t expecting to get very far. However, I did manage to get to my own personal goal. As well as being a new experience for my karate I decided to also use it as an new event to take pictures. This one I’m especially proud of as it was a spur of the moment picture. Hopefully over the next week I’ll be able to put up some of the other images that I captured at the competition.

Bath Bomb Thumbnail Image

Last weekend whilst I was trying to continue with my thesis corrections, and not getting very far, I decided that I would take a break and try to relax and see if that would help. Whilst I was relaxing I spotted the bath bombs that Jen was given as a present from a pupil at school and absolutely loved the range of colours. I ended up spending a hour or so capturing images of these balls, lighting them from different directions. Whilst some of the images weren’t that impressive, I did get some that I feel are pretty interesting, especially the ranges of colour. Anyway, I put together a small slide show of some of these images which can be found at this link. Whilst you watch or flick through the slide show, if you see an image you like then simply click on it and you will be taken to a 1600 x 1200 pixel version of the image that you can download.

Hmm, I seem to have some sort of picture posting thing going on here. Anyway this was another picture I took at Axel’s birthday get together. Click on the thumbnail above to see a larger version of the image.

I must apologies for the quality of the scans, as these were originally taken with an old 35mm SLR camera, they had to be scanned in. The scanner used a year ago obviously needed a bit of a clean.
