Catching up with old friends

April 26th, 2006

I’ve been meaning to do this since Sunday, but I haven’t had the time to sit down and write this.  So first of all I need to say sorry to everyone else for monopolizing Ralph’s time at the BBQ.  It was good to see and speak to Ralph; I just wish I could have stayed longer to catch up with everyone else.  As for the weekend, I drove down to Bournemouth to see Mark and Vix who were on my undergraduate degree.  It was good to catch up and spend time with them both, even if they were just getting over some sort of cold.  So just need to say a thank you for the two of them putting me up in flat.

Art Project

April 21st, 2006

Since last September, Jen and I have been looking for something to fill a picture frame we were given. Finially we decided that instead of simply cutting up pictures to put into this frame, that we would make something more personalized. The end result was a cross between Andy Warhol’s Marylin picture, and the cover art of Blur’s “best” album. I’m actually really impressed at how this little art project of ours has turned out. Maybe this is a sign of a new career that we should both follow, or maybe not.

Table Manipulator

April 18th, 2006

I have been working in the Psychology Department at the University of Kent for nearly a year now and during this time I’ve been asked to write experiment and programs for a wide range of tasks. In addition, I have found myself helping students and staff handling the data generated by both my programs and 3rd party software. One particular operation that I seem to be carrying out on virtually a weekly basis, is to manipulate a table of data. Whilst it only takes a couple of minutes to knock together a piece of code to actually manipulate the data in the way that I need, it is wasted time. So this weekend I put together a little Java program that I carried out three of the common manipulations that I do.

Image of table manipulation program v0.1

At present there are four manipulations the program allows you to carry out:

  • Swap columns and rows over
  • Reverse the order of the columns
  • Reverse the order of the rows
  • Convert the table into a single row of data

In future version I plan to add the ability to specify you own delimiter, in case you are using something really strange, and possibly look at the feasibility of loading other file types i.e. excel, spss, etc.

Time to relax

April 5th, 2006

At last the time has come to kick back and relax, well at least for a couple of days.¬† I’ve been programming like a mad man at work, in an attemp to get ahead of things.¬† Now, however, it is time for me to take a couple of days off to relax and do things that are not work related.¬† Will it work, who knows, but at least I won’t have to think about fighting my way through Canterbury traffic.¬† Speak to you all in a couple of days.
